Fantasy/Mystery/Science Fiction. It’s Angela DuPree’s first day on the job as a ticket agent and everything is going wrong. Then she sees a plane appear at gate 2B. It wasn’t supposed to be there. When no one exits the plane, Angela goes down the ramp to investigate. She finds no pilots or flight attendants, no people asking for help with their bags. Just 36 babies.
Thirteen years later, 13 year-old Jonah, receives a cryptic note that says, “You are one of the missing.” Jonah has always known he was adopted, his parents have told him from the beginning how special he was. Jonah figures that it is just a prank. And then his friend Chip receives the same letter. Unlike Jonah, Chip had no idea he was adopted. When he confronts his parents, they blow it off as no big deal and choose not to deal with Chip’s devastation. Jonah tells Chip he will do anything to help him, words that he will remember later. When both boys receive another letter that says, “Beware, they are coming back to get you,” it is clear there is a puzzle to solve. Jonah’s sister, Katherine, also becomes involved. The boys search the safe at Chip’s house and find a Post-it note with a name and number for James Reardon, FBI. Then Jonah’s dad calls the adoption agency to see if there is any new information and is given the number for, you guessed it, James Reardon, FBI. When Jonah and his family meet with the FBI, a mysterious janitor passes a clue to Jonah. From there the mystery becomes even more intriguing, leading to a war taking place in the future and a time-travel paradox.
As in Haddix’s series, Among The Hidden, she combines the everyday life of everyday kids with a fantastical mystery. The story starts with the mystery of the babies and a plane appearing from nowhere, continues with more mystery elements throughout the story, and ends with a cliffhanger that makes you realize that the whole story is just beginning. Students will eagerly await the arrival of the next book in the series. This exciting series should appeal to grades 4- 7. AR level 5.0.
